Don't freak out at the video length! The first 8 minutes demonstrate what I'll be showing you, and there are timestamps to jump around to parts that interest you. This is a super deep-dive MASTER CLASS showing you how Bitwig above any other DAW makes working with NI Maschine a relative breeze, enabling you to supercharge your production speed with the amazing content available in Maschine expan...
Beat Scholar - First Look - Making complex dance beats work in loud genres
Переглядів 9 тис.Рік тому
In this video, I demonstrate why I think Beat Scholar is an exciting tool for producer DJs who work in loud club/festival-oriented dance genres. Note: This video isn't strictly one of the "Mixing Loud with CTZ" episodes, because it's of general interest to anyone trying to make complex drum patterns work in sub-heavy bass music. But I am including this in the playlist for that series because th...
Mixing Loud with CTZ - Ep. 24 - Controlling (and using) width and depth
Переглядів 12 тис.Рік тому
In this video, I explain some considerations about managing width and depth. Spreading sounds out in the stereo field and in the depth field can help make more sounds happening all at the same time be more distinctly audible AND with less volume required per sound, which means less potential clipping in really loud genres. This is episode 24 in a series about how to mix for loudness, in large p...
Ducking one sub against another with smart:comp 2
Переглядів 6 тис.Рік тому
In this video, I do a short deep dive about making multiple subs work well together by ducking one against the other. To pull this off well, it's easiest to use a spectral ducking tool such as smart:comp 2 or DSEQ. (In this video, I use smart:comp 2). Note 1: I don't really show *how* to set up smart:comp 2 for spectral ducking in this video. I do have a short unlisted video where I walk throug...
Removing Harshness - Why RESO is superior to Soothe 2
Переглядів 41 тис.2 роки тому
EDIT: PLEASE BE SURE TO READ THE PINNED COMMENT! In this video, I do a deep dive about harshness removal. I see lots of people raving about Soothe 2 for this purpose, but I honestly think there is a MUCH better tool for the job, called "RESO" (by Mastering the Mix). I'll be explaining why I feel this way, and also showing general tips and tricks for resonance removal regardless of which tool yo...

Mixing Loud with CTZ - Ep. 23 - Considerations for mastering
Переглядів 11 тис.2 роки тому
In this video, I explain some considerations about mastering, both in the context of the Clip To Zero approach, and also just in general. I also talk about controlling harshness, and how to easily check for any potential problems ...
Mixing Loud with CTZ - Ep. 22 - Should you (and how to) use a mastering compressor?

Getting Kicks Right - Why your great-sounding kick might NOT be so great

In this video, I do a deep dive into a common problem with kicks that even moderately experienced producers can run into. Typically only more experienced producer DJs are aware of this problem and how to avoid it. Ermagerd! Sounds Bad! - Super Separator Trick (Bitwig style) Part 2
Переглядів 2,9 тис.2 роки тому
In my previous video about de-masking with Dan Worrall's "Super Separator Trick" (but done the Bitwig way), a few people complained that the trick sounded "too phasey" (too comb-filtered). This is because I was exaggerating the effect to make its demasking easy to hear, and I assumed that Bitwig users would just download the rack and discover the "Attenuate" control for themselves. UA-cam being...

I got this from the KVR: "A tool like Soothe is one step up from a dynamic EQ. Whereas in a Dyn EQ you set a specific frequency and treshold to react to dynamically, Soothe under the hood divides the signal in many narrow spectral bands. When you set Soothe for example to the upper-mids it will analyse the signal and then reduce those bands poking out too much compared to the average (= resonances). It does so not fixed to one specific frequency point, but to an entire range of the spectrum as defined by the user (eg upper-mids). It will not reduce just one defined frequency node as in a Dyn EQ, but it will reduce whatever frequency bands are poking out too much. The difference is pretty obvious once you have used it." So Reso is not doing this, right?

  • @xphorm
    @xphorm День тому

I may be wrong but I don't think Reso is superior to Soothe2, because they are in different leagues, and Soothe2 is one level up. Reso analyzes the given portion audio and makes a list of resonant frequencies which you can adjust, but Soothe2 does it all the time, so there's no need to "listen" to audio, and frequencies that are resonant are moving all the time, the curve in Soothe2 is biasing curve which just describe where and how you want Soothe2 to intervene. Also, in example that you showed, Soothe2 sounds better to me. I would really want someone to confirm my way of thinking about this, or to deny it, I may say I'm not too sure that I'm right.

The clip-to-zero method is really genius IMO. Though, personally I use an altered version where I don't worry about the CTZ mixing stuff until I'm in the mixdown phase - I don't like stressing about mixing stuff until I've got the composition and arrangement laid down, also I'm generally aiming for around -10 LUFS rather than -7 LUFS, because I like trying to retain as much dynamics as possible while still making it sound "loud enough" to fit in with modern mix aesthetic. But yeah, even with those tweaks I'm finding it incredibly useful for achieving the results I'm after in a more predictable and repeatable way. I also like that it shows how even hard clipping, which is said to be "the devil" by many audio engineers, pros and hobbyists alike, can still be a genuinely useful tool in your mixing toolbox - because I don't think anything in music production is categorically bad to do, it all depends on the circumstances. For shaving off tiny transient peaks from a sound, clippers can actually work more transparently than limiters. Anyway, I wanna thank you for spreading the message about this technique, because it's helped me a lot with my mixdowns.

Hey Baph, I noticed you don't use any of Bitwig's AUX FX... I guess because you are making use of the GROUP folders as buses? Are they functionally equal? How would you treat Aux FX outside of your folder system? Gain/Clip on those channels too?

  • @DigitalAura

I thought this would be about clippers, and it turns out I learned how compressors actually work like transient shapers, and how LFO shapers are like side chain compression. So much "gold" in this treasure chest! Subscribed!

Hello @Baphometrix , thanks for the amazing content and useful tutorials! I have a question regarding the topic of this video: Does this sweet spot apply also to all UAD and Slate Digital plugins? The UAD 1176 include a Headroom knob in case the signal is too hot. Doesn't that solve the issue? Would it sound different if the Gain reduction is exactly the same? Thanks :D

Having learned the -18db method of gainstaging with VU's on each channel, this series provide a completely different approach. Watching the whole series and picking up other tools and techniques on the way. I like the focus on only clipping if you have to, and it should be transparent. Removing a 1 or 2 milisecond click from a transient that is spiking 8db is not destroying dynamics of an instrument in most cases. Seems to me you'd be doing your comps, or any other tools in your signal path a favor. The modern ear is used to listening to heavily compressed audio. So far in the series, I haven't seen one compressor in use, it's all been about gaining loudness as transparently as possible through sound design, gain staging and clipping, if needed. Great great stuff.

just FYI, on the Serum global tab there is a setting for unison stereo width, which is by default set to 100%. To achieve that width, frequencies are put out of phase so it is self-evident that the more of this width you use, the more you will lose because the frequencies are all folded together resulting in phase cancellation. I have tested Serum vs Vital and sort of did the same checks you did here. It's pretty obvious to me that in this video you have much more stereo unison width setting on Serum than on Avenger (perhaps there is no setting for the user to change the width further than what you have here and Avenger devs decided that they never wanted unison voices to be that much out of phase as is possible on Serum). On headphones it's quite easy to hear that your Avenger sound is much less wide than Serum. So in conclusion, it's not that the way Serum does stereo is more detrimental than Avenger (which i get the impression is what you are saying with the video). Serum just allows you to do wider stereo (aka out of phase sides), or maybe you just missed a global stereo setting on Avenger which allows you to go wider as well.
